Students at the Space Operations Institute operate the on-campus backup mission control center for satellite missions as a development and training area as well (if need be) a fallback for the primary centers. By allowing students to utilize both extended mission and pre-launch satellites as learning tools, NASA and contractors save millions of dollars by training the next generation of flight controllers and systems engineers as well as prolonging the operational life of satellites.
Today, the SOI has evolved beyond simply satellite operations into a program where students develop software, test software, design ground systems, engineer systems, and provide systems administration. Students receive experience directly applicable to their academic training and future careers. To date, SOI has been a part of six satellite projects during its lifespan.
Consider the Space Operations Institute at Capitol College for your next satellite mission or project, or challenge our students with your space operations program!
