American losses to economic espionage may top $100 billion a year! The president’s detailed travel plans somehow find their way into a public trash can! A single laptop holding personal information on thousands of veterans gets stolen! Air marshals find themselves easily identifiable at airports across the country because of their own standard operations procedures! U.S. military members post detailed battle damage assessment photos and descriptions in blogs, evidently believing that the enemy has no interest or capability to monitor the Internet! The list goes on and on.
As a nation, we have effective systems in place to protect classified information, but we continue to give away proprietary, personal, military, and other critical information, never grasping its potential value in the hands of our opponents, economic competitors, foreign intelligence services, or military enemies. A strong Operations Security (OPSEC) program can help your organization identify and protect this valuable data.
Rick Estberg, chief of staff for the Department of Defense’s Interagency Operations Security Support Staff (IOSS), will present an intensive one-day introduction to building an OPSEC program. Learn why your organization needs to take a hard look at its own operations, and how a sound OPSEC program can play an important role in safeguarding individuals, families, organizations and our nation!
Rick Estberg has been employed by the Department of Defense for more than 30 years. He began his career with a four-year stint in the Army as a linguist at the U.S. Army Field Station in Berlin, Germany. He began his civilian career with the department in 1980 and served as a German and Russian translator, intelligence advisor to the U.S. European Command, and senior speech writer for his agency’s director, before being named a Brookings Institution LEGIS Fellow in 1997. After working on the staff of Rep. Bobby Scott (D-Va.), he held several foreign relations and operations staff positions. He joined IOSS in late 2003, and in these past 3 years, has addressed audiences totaling over 23,000, covering topics ranging from the five-step OPSEC process and building an OPSEC program, to the "blogs of war" and identity theft. Additionally, more than 1,250 students have attended his briefing skills classes. He is the recent recipient of his agency's Meritorious Civilian Service Award.
Mr. Estberg will be joined by guest speaker David McCune of the Interagency Training Center, who will talk about hardware vulnerabilities.
This class provides an introduction to OPSEC, with emphasis on the following topics:
