Capitol College has expanded its Information Assurance program by creating a Cyber Laboratory where various hacker attacks can be simulated, detected, analyzed and defeated. The new lab provides hands-on experiences to increase the IA knowledge of undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in IA and related programs, middle and high school students, and area professionals working in the field. Designed as an experiential learning center, the Cyber Lab upholds the school's mission of providing a practical and relevant education.
The college received one of twelve BRAC higher education grants in December 2009 to develop the lab, making it one of the foremost institutions in Maryland for Information Assurance education.
The Cyber Lab will increase the number of Capitol graduates who are educated in securing information systems and well-qualified for positions within BRAC agencies. In addition, as part of a partnership with Maryland MESA, the college will coordinate high school and middle school visits to the lab, and encourage them to pursue STEM and STEM-related careers.
The lab is helping the state of Maryland acheive its vision of becoming “cyber Maryland."
The Cyber Laboratory will:
Provide intensive hands-on experiences to increase the knowledge of students enrolled in the college’s Bachelor of Science programs in Information Assurance, Telecommunications Engineering Technology, Software Engineering and Computer Science.
Offer a realistic learning environment for current and potential members of the Fort Meade workforce who enroll in specialized IA training programs and certification preparation classes.
Members of the following organizations serve on the Cyber Lab Advisory Board:
The relationship Capitol has with both industry and government, through this lab, places it in a rare group of schools who draw upon the unique strength and synergy created by such a venture.
