




College Preparation Intervention Program 2012
The College Preparation Intervention Program (CPIP) 2012 supports practices that promote college preparedness with an effort to prepare high school and middle school students for the rigors of college and setting career goals with workshops focusing on the relationship between business and careers in STEM fields. Capitol College understands this urgent need to prepare students for college and has a long-standing tradition of making a quality education accessible to first-generation college students.
2012 “Kick-Off” Event for all Students and Parents
February, 2012 (Held at high school locations)
Purpose: Students and parents will participate in a kick-off event that will provide an overview of FY2012 program activities, measurable goals, and objectives. Participants will sign-up for 2012 workshops.
Career Exploration Workshop: Business Mathematics and Financial Literacy
February, 2012 (Held at Capitol College)
Purpose: Students will gain increased knowledge on basics of business, mathematics, and financial literacy as they relate to consumer credit including student loans. Students will also gain an increased understanding of the factors that impact credit score. Workshop facilitators will provide clear examples of the impact credit scores have on the cost of goods. Students will be able to assess the final cost of buying with credit
Career Exploration Workshop - Cyber Security
March 2012 (Held at Capitol College)
Purpose: Students will gain increased knowledge on careers in cyber security and basic security principles found in information assurance. Workshop facilitators will provide clear examples on increasing security through the use of devices and strong security techniques. Students will gain increased understanding regarding student awareness of real-life security threats & various attacks. Hands-on activities will take place in Capitol College’s Cyber Battle Lab.
The Journey to College Event
April 2012 (Held at High School Locations)
Purpose: Students and parents will gain increased knowledge of the activities involved in the college admissions and financial aid process. Workshop facilitators will provide concrete resources to assist students and families.
Career Exploration Workshop - Space Science
May 2012 (Held at Capitol College)
Purpose: Students will gain increased knowledge on careers in astronautic engineering and space science. In this session students will tour Capitol’s Space Operations Institute (SOI) and assemble model rocket kits in preparation for launch at the end of the workshop. The session includes a talk on the history and physics of rocket flight.
Dress for Success Admissions and Scholarship Interview Workshops
(2 Workshops-Presentation Workshop and Mock Interview Workshop)
September 2012 (Held at high school locations and Capitol College)
Purpose: Students will gain increased understanding of the college search process. Workshop facilitators will provide clear examples of the types of behaviors appropriate during the interview process including cost effective ways to dress for interviews. An additional component of the workshop will address proper public/business communications with an emphasis on “soft skills.”
Project SCOPE (Security Clearance Overview and Preparation Education) Workshop
October 2012 (Held at Capitol College)
Purpose: To educate students about the resources available from Fort Meade Alliance’s Project SCOPE Security Clearance Overview and Preparation Education program. Students will gain a greater understanding of how best to prepare for obtaining a security clearance as well as the career benefits of having a security clearance.
Financial Management, Financial Aid, and Scholarship Workshop
November 2012 (Held at high school locations)
Purpose: Students and parents will gain increased knowledge of the activities involved in the scholarship and financial aid process. Provide concrete resources to assist students and families including debt management information, financial literacy training, financial aid programs, assistance in completing financial aid applications, and resources for identifying public and private scholarships. A major component will be preparing students and parents on how to complete the FAFSA.
