Students will learn the differences between leadership and management. The important leadership traits that apply to engineering and project management responsibilities will be stressed. Through lectures, exercises and case studies, students will better understand their individual leadership abilities.

Students will be provided an opportunity to interact with representatives from local and regional businesses (e.g., aerospace, NASA, NSA, etc.) and learn about local careers available in STEM fields. This workshop will also feature a Career Expo where students can receive materials and talk directly with company recruiters regarding employment opportunities.

3/25/11 Michael Nance to Speak at Capitol
Michael Nance is the Cyber CTO for the Lockheed Martin Information Systems & Global Services (IS&GS) Civil Product line group. IS&GS employs approximately 53,000 people worldwide and reported $12.2 billion in sales in 2009. Lockheed Martin is the largest provider of information technology to the federal government.
Nance was appointed to this position in November 2008. In this role, he functions as the Civil Product Line Cyber CTO, and he leads the organization’s Cyber Strategic Focus Group and related Information Assurance and Information Operations (IA / IO) activities and pursuits. Mr. Nance also serves as a principal investigator and leader in the creation of advanced IA/ IO research studies. He joined Lockheed Martin in 2003. Prior to his current position, Mr. Nance served as an Information Assurance Senior Manager for Lockheed Martin IS&GS and IS&S, where he oversaw engineering teams in the design, implementation, and testing of trusted ground, airborne, and space-based systems.
Nance has over two decades of experience in information technologies, and is an expert in computer network infrastructure and cyber space operations. Before joining Lockheed Martin, Mr. Nance was Vice President of Information Security in the banking sector. He also helped in the creation of NTech Group, an engineering consulting practice where he held the position of Chief Technology Officer. Mr. Nance’s government experience includes 14 years with the United States Air Force, working in telecommunications and cryptographic systems.
Nance is a Certified Information System Security Professional (CISSP) and an Information Systems Security Management and Architecture Professional (ISSMP / ISSAP). He received a Masters in Information Systems and a B.S. in Information Technology from the University of Phoenix. He is a graduate of the Lockheed Martin Institute for Leadership Excellence and a member of the Lockheed Martin Executive Grant Committee for affiliate university research. He is active in the information technology community, including with InfraGard and various ISAC’s.

Capitol College President, Michael T. Wood, PhD and Vice President Michael G. Gibbs, EdD represented the college at League for Innovation STEMtech Conference in Orlando, Fla. They presented a show poster titled “Capitol College: Building a STEM Pipeline” and Dr. Gibbs lead a talk “Community Colleges and Four-Year Institutions: Partners in STEM Education.”
Capitol served as a co-sponsor of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific and the Geological Society of America’s national meeting held at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Dr. Michael G. Gibbs, vice president for advancement, director of the Center and assistant professor in the School of Business and Information Sciences, attended the conference and represented the college. The meeting focused on education and outreach in space and earth science with K-12, community college and college/university students.
Dr. Gibbs and Dianne Veenstra, vice president for planning and assessment, provided an oral presentation titled: Capitol College Center for Space Science Education and Public Outreach: Building a STEM Pipeline.
Dr. Gibbs, Associate Professor Angela Walters and Mr. Ken Dolan, of the college’s Space Operations Institute presented a poster titled: The Capitol College Space Operations Institute: A Partnership with NASA.
Dr. Gibbs also served on a panel discussion titled: Making Connections with Underserved Communities: Broadening Participation in the STEM Fields.
STEM Outreach Coordinator Sydnee Distance represented Capitol College at the Multinational Development of Women in Technology (MDWIT) 2010 Women and Technology Conference. Held at the Sheraton Hotel in Columbia, Maryland. The conference focused on Global Diversity: Enriching Technology and drew more than 300 women technology professionals from state and federal agencies, educational institutions, nonprofits and the business community. Distance presented an award winning poster entitled Capitol College Center for Space Science and Outreach: Encouraging STEM Careers created by herself, Dr. Michael G. Gibbs, Dianne Veenstra, and Associate Professor Angela Walters.
Prince George's Community College students visited campus for a STEM Workforce and Leadership Development Workshop. Students had an opportunity to interact with representatives from local and regional businesses, such as Northrop Grumman and NASA, and participate in the college's 25th Annual Engineering, Computer Sciences, Information Technology and Business Career Fair. They also had lunch on campus and met with Dr. Denise Smith, from the Office of Public Outreach at the STScI.
Students from Prince George’s Community College attended the NASA Space Missions Workshop, an event that is a part of the Emerging STEM Leaders Program, an initiative that encourages community college students to not only earn a bachelor’s degree in a STEM field, but to emerge from their education as skilled professionals and innovative leaders in those fields.
Dr. David Leisaweitz, mission scientist for WISE, gave a presentation to students on the current objectives and survey progress for the satellite mission. In addition to learning more about the Space Operations Institute from Ken Dolan, SOI director and astronautical engineering faculty, attendees also got a behind-the-scenes tour of the Space Operations Institute with demonstrations of the mission control center.
Justin Gronert, a Space Operations Institute student, Dr. Michael G. Gibbs, vice president for advancement, and Angela Walters, professor of astronautical engineering, attended a Precollege Career Fair sponsored by Maryland MESA. The fair was held at the Baltimore Convention Center where Gronert shared his experiences working on NASA missions and how the SOI has helped him further his educational and career goals.

Capitol College was invited to tour NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD. Guests included President Michael Wood; Dianne Veenstra, vice president for planning and assessment; Michael Gibbs, vice president of college advancement; Adam Trice, director of foundation relations/grant writer; Jason Copley, associate director of development; and Angela Walters, professor of astronautical engineering. Visitors were given an opportunity to explore the facilities, browse exhibits, and view NASA’s innovative work.

Dr. Michael G. Gibbs and Angela Walters, professor of astronautical engineering, gave a presentation entitled Space Science EPO: Providing STEM Education at the 215th meeting of the American Astronomical Society held in Washington D.C. in early January 2010. This presentation provided an introduction to the Center of Space Science Education and Public Outreach, the Space Operations Institute and other public outreach activities Capitol College is doing with middle schools and high schools in the State of Maryland.
The 215th meeting of the American Astronomical Society was sponsored by Capitol College.
