Commencement Procedures

The Capitol College community gathers for commencement once every year in May on the main campus in Laurel. Commencement ceremonies are held outside, rain or shine, and students are encouraged to invite anyone they wish to attend. A general agenda for graduates is listed below and is subject to change.

8 a.m. – 8:20 a.m. Check In You will receive a card with your name that will be used during ceremony; please do not lose this card. After checking in, please put on your cap and gown and remain in the auditorium. Please do not leave the auditorium until instructed to do so.
8:45 a.m. Photography Setup Proceed to photography area.
9 a.m. Class Photographs Smile and say Cheese!
9:30 a.m. First Roll Call Proceed to the second floor hallway, where roll call will be taken. Please do not leave the area and please stay in alphabetical order.
9:45 a.m. Procession Begins Walk down the aisle in single file; turn into the first row of seats, then the second row and so on. Remain standing until the marshal tells you to be seated.
Processional
  • The Marshal of the college will lead the processional, followed in order by alumni, the school banners, the candidates for the associate degrees, the candidates for bachelor's degrees and the candidates for master's degrees. The faculty, trustees and other participants in the ceremony will round out the processional.
  • During the conferring of degrees, the first person in the graduating group called will lead the group to the stairs at the right of the stage (stage left). Be sure you have your name card with you. The announcer will request it on stage. After receiving your degree, return to your seat and be seated.
  • For the recessional, the stage participants will exit first and the graduates will follow.

Immediately following the ceremony, graduates, family members and guests are invited to gather for light refreshments in the Campus Center.

Receiving your degree

Diplomas for degrees are printed once each year. Students who have met all graduation requirements and application deadlines may pick up their diplomas following commencement with photo identification.

Students who complete degrees between yearly commencements will be issued transcripts indicating a completed degree with the month and year the degree was completed. Be reminded that transcripts always reflect the exact semester your degree program is completed, however the date of degree conferred on transcripts and diplomas is the month and year of the commencement ceremony.

Master's Degrees

If you complete all degree requirements by the end of the summer (Term I, Term II or summer semester classes) you are permitted to take part in the commencement ceremonies as degree candidates. This includes graduate students who have up to the maximum of nine credits remaining and are enrolled for the summer session. If you are not enrolled by the final day of summer registration, you will not be permitted to participate as a degree candidate.

In Absentia

Students who plan on receiving their degree in absentia should complete and turn in the diploma request form.
