EMS Week Speech Given by Dr. Michael Gibbs
May 16, 2011
This April, Dr. Michael Gibbs, vice president for advancement, presented to members of the Prince Williams County Fire Department on the topic of leadership, as part of National Emergency Medical Services Week 2011. Lieutenant Paul Smiljanich and Lieutenant Matt Child were on hand to record the presentation, which will be shown to over 900 EMS workers.
“During EMS Week, our [emergency medical service professionals] attend a myriad of lectures on subject areas that may normally not be seen, but are integral to their jobs,” Smiljanich said. “These lectures open new doors for education to all EMS workers.”
During his presentation Gibbs spoke to the importance of leadership in management positions, how organizations can be reframed to strengthen leadership, how leaders motivate others for success, and how anyone can be a leader.
“With this presentation, we’re trying to broaden the understanding of leadership for 900 EMS providers,” Child said.
Gibbs is coauthor of the book “Perspectives on Leadership Education: Strategies of Leadership Education,” with fellow Capitol faculty member Dr. Helen Barker. National EMS Week is taking place this week, May 15 – 21.
