Capitol Gears up for National Cybersecurity Awareness Month
September 8, 2011
October is an exciting time at Capitol College as numerous events are held on campus in conjunction with National Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Held every October since 2001, National Cybersecurity Awareness Month is a public awareness campaign that encourages everyone to protect their computers and the nation’s critical cyber infrastructure.
The first event taking place on the Capitol campus is a MESA high school visit, in which local high school students will be given demonstrations of Capitol’s Cyber Battle Lab (CBL). The students will also tour the college’s Space Operation’s Institute. This event will take place on Friday, Oct. 7.
Next, the “Cyber Battle Lab Showcase” event will be held on Thursday, Oct. 13, and will highlight the advances made in the CBL throughout its first year of existence. Keith A. Rhodes, chief technology officer of QinetiQ North America Missions Solutions, will speak during breakfast and presentations by representatives from the Department of Homeland Security and Governor Martin O’Malley’s office will follow. Members of the corporate community, including Lockheed Martin, will be present.
Also on Oct. 13, is a meeting of the Cyber Battle Lab Advisory Board, immediately following the showcase event.
On Oct. 18, the event "Hacking Windows 7 and Defending Against Physical Attacks" will teach security measures that can be implemented to prevent attacks on Windows 7. The event will be led by Jesse Varsalone, assistant professor of Cyber Security at CCBC.
Concluding National Cybersecurity Awareness Month on campus is the Innovation and Leadership Institute’s President’s Forum. On Wednesday, Oct. 26, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Robert F. Lentz will speak to members of the Capitol community about the growing importance of cybersecurity. As the current president and CEO of Cyber Security Strategies, LLC, Lentz has an in depth understanding of the challenges of cybersecurity.
As the importance of cybersecurity continues to grow both nationally and internationally, Capitol College strives to address the growing need for cybersecurity education and professionals.
