New "College Preparation and Intervention Program" Welcomes Local High School Students
September 12, 2012
This month, Capitol College will begin its College Preparation Intervention Program (CPIP) with students from Potomac High School and High Point High School.
The goal of CPIP is to prepare high school and middle school students for the rigors of college and help them set career goals. Numerous workshops will demonstrate the importance and opportunity of careers in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. Other sessions also deal with financial management, scholarships, obtaining security clearances and college interviews.
The first session titled “Journey to College/Financial Management and Scholarship Workshop” will be held at each respective high school in late September and will detail the financial aid process, including how to properly complete the FAFSA form. Capitol College representatives will also discuss SAT preparation with those in attendance. This workshop is for both students and parents.
The second workshop, “Career Exploration: Space Science,” will explore the opportunities available to students in the astronautical engineering and space science fields. Following the space science workshop is the third session, titled “Project SCOPE (Security Clearance Overview and Preparation Education Workshop).” This workshop will help students prepare for obtaining a security clearance and detail the career benefits of having a security clearance.
Finally, the program will wrap up the final workshop, “Dress for Success: Admissions and Scholarship Interview.” At the last session, the students will be taught the basics of the college search process and will learn how to appropriately conduct themselves during a college scholarship interview. Capitol representatives will discuss public and business communications and give tips for finding cost effective ways to dress up for college interviews.
The CPIP is another initiative of Capitol College’s Center for Space Science Education and Public Outreach (SSEPO). The SSEPO provides hands-on education and workforce development experiences for students in K-12, community colleges, colleges or universities and those who support them in achieving leadership careers in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields.
