Celebrate National Engineers Week 2013 with Capitol College

Capitol College will be hosting various events for National Engineers Week 2013, which starts on Sunday, Feb. 17 and concludes on Saturday, Feb. 23.
The highlight of Capitol’s activities will take place on Friday, Feb. 22 when the Emerging STEM Leaders Program and IEEE present Asst. Prof. Sandy Antunes for his presentation titled “How Much Damage Can You Do From Space.” The author of three books on the design, launch and orbit of picosatellites, Antunes will discuss amateur satellite launches and help students analyze the many aspects of picosatellites. The presentation will touch on launch risks, space pollution and re-entry. This event will take place in the lyceum from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

What: Laser Maze
When: Monday, Feb. 18 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Come test your skill at the maze without breaking the beam of light! A series of mirrors and reflections designed and created by Prof. Antunes will be used to create this challenge.
What: Soldering Demo
When: Monday, Feb. 18 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Where: Student Center
Ever try soldering? Now’s your chance as Capitol’s Society of Women Engineers host their demonstration and workshop.
What: Space Debris
When: Tuesday, Feb. 19 from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
What: NSBE Engineering Workshop
When: Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 3:00 p.m.

Ever wonder what the impact of black engineers has been? Come join the engineering workshop sponsored by Capitol’s National Society of Black Engineers to see if you can replicate the results of black engineers of the past.
What: Pasta Bridge
When: Thursday, Feb. 21 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Where: Robotics Lab
Are you able to build a bridge that not only covers an expanse of space, but is sturdy enough to drive across? Come try your skills with Capitol’s oSTEM.
What: Programming Competition
When: Thursday, Feb. 21 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Capitol’s IEEE will be holding a programming competition to test your programming skills against your peers and the club’s leadership.
According to the Engineers Week Foundation “Engineers Week celebrates the positive contributions engineers make to society and is a catalyst for outreach across the country to kids and adults alike. Engineers Week is part of many corporate and government cultures and is celebrated on every U.S. engineering college campus.”
