February 7, 2008 Annapolis, Maryland
The Maryland Independent College and University Association (MICUA) brought over 150 college students and presidents from across the state to Annapolis on February 7, 2008 for a day of briefings and special activities in the Historic Inns of Annapolis, Calvert House. Governor Martin O'Malley has recently declared February 7 as "Maryland Independent Higher Education Day" in recognition of the vital role Maryland's independent colleges serve in the state of Maryland.
Attending this event from Capitol College was our own President Wood, Dean of Student Life Melinda Bunnell-Rhyne, Vice President for External Affairs Richard Beall, and six students; Danielle Eason, Christian Allen, Joshua Hampton, Douglas Daniels, Christopher Swain and Gregory Hustead.
The Capitol student group lobbied appropriate state legislators, heard from the leaders of MICUA and sat in on a keynote presentation from the guest of honor, Lieutenant Governor Anthony Brown. MICUA then hosted a reception and dinner that attracted many key senators and delegates to the 33rd annual event.
"It was a great day. Our appointments were kept, and we received support from both continuing and new legislators," said President Wood. "Many thanks go out to the students for joining us and to Melinda and Richard for organizing the event."
The Maryland Independent College and University Association (MICUA) is a member-driven organization devoted to serving the interests of independent higher education and supporting the work of campus leaders throughout the state. As the voice of independent higher education in Maryland, MICUA seeks to inform the broader public about its member institutions and the vital importance of independent colleges and universities to the future of our state and nation.
