The highs and lows of sports have never been as dramatic as the pandemonium that was the first ever Student vs. Faculty/Staff Kickball game at Capitol College, played Friday, March 28, 2008. In spite of a tremendous effort, the students were forced to walk away with their first loss.*
Capitol students such as Divine Nazeer and Christian Allen came into Friday’s game with heads held high and smug grins on their faces. Anticipation of an easy victory was apparent in their attitudes. Little did they know that they were going up against a team that had strength, speed, agility and athletes with many years of experience under their belts.
Thundering out of the gate early, the Faculty/Staff team racked up an early four-run lead in the first inning, setting the standard for what was to be a chaotic game for the students. First-round draft pick Kathy Werner zipped around bases like a gazelle, and Megan Campbell was not afraid to get down and dirty on several force-outs.
Play picked up in the second inning for the students with excellent play by Danielle Eason and Gregory Yates, however a few bad calls by the lone umpire was enough to squash any hope of triumph in their hearts.
Student stars like Corey Fletcher, Akeem McCoy and Melody Ford were left dumbstruck as Professor Herve Franceschi and Earl Gottsman kicked pitches miles into the outfield, while the triple threat of Grant Vargo, John Ryan and Joy Johnson left several students shaking in their boots when on base.
The bedlam continued right up until the bottom of the last inning, when despite last minute efforts by students Rickey Smith, Lorenzo Gray and Takeisha Wims, the Faculty/Staff team walked off the field with the upset win.
*Happy April Fool’s Day! Congratulations students on winning the first Student vs. Faculty/Staff Kickball game!
