Wednesday, July 2, 2008 marked an important date for Prince George's Community College students studying for an associates degree in applied science in information security.
Executives and faculty from both Capitol College and PGCC signed an agreement between the two colleges for the articulation of PGCC's AASIS degree to the bachelor of science in information assurance degree at Capitol.
Under the new agreement, students are able to painlessly transfer class credits earned for the AASIS degree toward a higher degree in information assurance at Capitol. This agreement means that Capitol College has once again reached out into the local community to encourage students to continue their education.
"It is our goal at Capitol College to become an educational provider of choice for the community college graduates in Prince George's and the surrounding counties," says Ken Crockett, Capitol's Interim Dean of Information and Business Management. "By developing formal articulation agreements, Capitol College is proactively providing those students opportunities to consider higher degree programs in the information assurance industry."
Other goals of the agreement were to establish a mutual understanding and a clear set of expectations for students, each institution, and the respective degree programs, and to establish a pathway for PGCC's AASIS graduates to successfully transition from one institution to another.
"Providing the specific course-by-course transfer equivalencies allows community college students to see which degree programs will grant the most number of credits," says Crockett. "This information is extremely valuable to students when they are selecting between degree programs and even more so when selecting between different colleges and universities."
The strategic location of both PGCC and Capitol College in the Baltimore/Washington Corridor ensures that transfer students affected by the agreement, and consequently Capitol's information assurance graduates, have excellent opportunities to be employed as professionals at some of the most prestigious information assurance organizations in the country, including the Department of Defense, DHS and NSA.
