Students, donors recognized at annual breakfast

April 12, 2005 Laurel, Maryland

Student scholars and donors to the scholarship fund will be honored Thursday, April 14, at the 15th annual Scholarship Appreciation Breakfast.

The annual springtime event brings together donors and the recipients of their contributions, which have financially assisted hundreds of students over the years.

"The Capitol College scholarship fund helps our talented students with the extra funding they need to keep their education costs down,” said Joy Johnson, director of development and alumni services. "We are certainly very appreciative of the contributions of our donors. The breakfast gives us a chance to share that sentiment, as well as recognize the hard work of our students."

Trustee Mark F. Davis will give the keynote address at this year's breakfast. Davis is a retired group vice president of data services network operations for Verizon Advanced Services, where he was responsible for building and maintaining Verizon's switching and transport networks.

With more than 30 years of experience in the communications field, Davis previously served as vice president-technical and operations support. He has a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois and a master of science in computer science from the University of Northern Illinois.

Special recognition will go to the current and past recipients of the Avrum Gudelsky Memorial Scholarship. This year's Gudelsky Scholar, Jason Tobiasz, a senior studying computer science, will provide remarks. The Gudelsky award is presented annually to a rising senior at commencement and is the highest award conferred by the college.

Contributors to the scholarship fund at Capitol College have given more than $2 million throughout the past three decades. With more than 40 named scholarships, the college is able to provide scholarship recipients with awards ranging from $2,000 to nearly-full tuition paid.
