Middle States Commission on Higher Education Reaffirms Capitol College’s Accreditation

LAUREL, Md. (July 5, 2011) – This June, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education acted to reaffirm the accreditation of Capitol College and also affirm the inclusion of the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center, in California, Md., within the scope of the institution’s accreditation.

 

The accreditation was reaffirmed after a Middle States Commission committee visited Capitol’s campus in March to meet with the executive council, faculty and staff, and also review the institution’s lengthy self-study.

 

The self-study requires 14 standards of approval including, educational offerings, student support services, faculty, educational assessment and institutional assessment, among others. The commission approved all 14 of Capitol’s self-study standards.

 

“The Middle States Commission self-study is an important measure in maintaining the rigorous and rewarding curricula and college experience that Capitol provides to its students,” Dr. Michael Wood, president, said. “By reaffirming our accreditation, the Middle States Commission has recognized the dedication and high quality of work put forth by Capitol’s faculty, staff and students.”

 

With the accreditation, Capitol is authorized by the state of Maryland to confer postsecondary certificates, associate’s degrees, bachelor’s degrees, postbaccalaureate certificates, master’s degrees and a doctor of science in information assurance. Capitol College received its first accreditation from the Middle States Commission in 1976.

 

The Middle States Commission reexamines institutions every 10 years, meaning Capitol’s next self-study review will take place in the 2020-2021 academic year. The commission also requires periodic reviews during the time between self-study reviews.

 

Capitol College is the only independent college in Maryland dedicated to education in engineering, computer science, information technology and business through practices of leadership and innovation. Founded in 1927, Capitol offers associate, bachelor’s and master's degrees, a doctor of science in information assurance, professional development training and certificates.
