Grants

Grants are financial aid awards that do not have to be paid back. To be considered for grants, you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

  • Federal Pell Grant. Pell Grants are awarded almost exclusively to undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor's degree. The U.S. Department of Education awards Pell Grants to those students who have exceptional financial need. Filing your FAFSA constitutes applying for a Pell Grant, and Capitol College's Financial Aid Office will inform you about the size of the grant for which you qualify. Be sure to include the Capitol College code-001436-on your FAFSA.

  • Academic Competitiveness Grant. These federal grants are awarded to Pell Grant eligible U.S. citizens who have completed a rigorous secondary school program of study.

  • National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (National SMART Grant). An eligible student must receive a Pell Grant during the same award year; be a U.S. citizen; be a full-time student in his or her third or fourth academic year of undergraduate degree study; be pursuing a major in physical, life, or computer sciences, mathematics, technology, engineering or critical foreign language; and have at least a 3.0 grade point average as of the end of the second award year and continue to maintain a 3.0 grade point average.

  • The Howard P. Rawlings Educational Excellence Awards. These grant program funds (Guaranteed Access Grant, Educational Assistance Grant, Part-time Grant and Professional Scholarship Program) are awarded to fulltime eligible students who filed their FAFSA after the state’s March 1 deadline.

  • Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (SEOG). Another program of the federal government, SEOG grants are given to students with exceptional financial need. Students who have filed their FAFSA by March 1 and meet eligibility requirements are automatically considered for a SEOG grant.

  • Maryland Part-Time Grant. The Maryland Higher Education Commission provides grants for part-time undergraduate Maryland residents based on need. Students must be enrolled for at least six, but fewer than 12, credits per semester. Funds are limited. Students who file their FAFSA and meet eligibility requirements are automatically considered for this program.
